Berberine Ameliorates Renal Functional Disorders and Pulmonary Tissue Injury Following Renal Ischemia/Reperfusion in Rats
Authors
Abstract:
Introduction: This study investigated the effect of berberine on renal dysfunction and histological damages of the lung induced by renal ischemia/ reperfusion at an early stage. Methods: There were four experimental groups of adult male rats (n=7). Seven days before induction of ischemia, the Ber+I/R group received oral (by gavage) berberine (15 mg/kg/day) while the I/R group received distilled water. Renal arteries were not occluded in the sham group and Ber+sham group, and they were administered distilled water and berberine (15 mg/kg/day), respectively, by gavage 7 days before surgery. Renal ischemia was induced by occlusion of both renal arteries for 45 min followed by 24 h of reperfusion. Blood samples were collected for biochemical analysis, and finally lung samples were preserved for light microscopical examination. Results: The 45 min ischemia/24 h reperfusion resulted in renal functional disorders and histological damages to the lung, which were associated with increased plasma levels of creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALK) during reperfusion period. In the Ber+I/R group, renal functional disorders and histological damage to the lung were improved, which was accompanied by less increase in plasma creatinine, BUN, LDH and ALK than those of the non-treated rats. Conclusion: Berberine has an ameliorative effect on renal as well as pulmonary injuries following renal ischemia/reperfusion in rats.

full textSumatriptan ameliorates renal injury induced by cisplatin in mice
Objective(s): Cisplatin (Cis) is an anticancer compound, which is used for the treatment of various cancers. Sumatriptan (Suma) is a selective agonist of 5-hydroxytryptamine 1B/1D (5HT1B/1D) receptor, which is prescribed for the management of migraine. It is well-established that Suma has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. We have explored the protective effe...
full textOrexin-A Improves Hepatic Injury Following Renal Ischemia Reperfusion in Rats
Introduction: Orexins are novel neuropeptides that are localized in neurons in the lateral hypothalamus. They are implicated in a wide variety of physiological functions. Orexin peptides and receptors are found in many peripheral organs such as kidneys. It has been demonstrated that exogenous orexin-A can induce protective effects against ischemia–reperfusion injury in many organs. The goal ...

Methylglyoxal (MG), a highly reactive carbonyl compound generated by carbohydrate oxidation and glycolysis, is the major precursor of protein glycation and induces cytotoxicity leading to apoptosis. Although recent studies have emphasized that MG accumulates in not only chronic oxidative stress-related diseases but also acute hypoxic conditions, the pathogenic contribution of MG in acute diseas...
full textAstaxanthin ameliorates ferric nitrilotriacetate-induced renal oxidative injury in rats
Daily intake of vegetables can reduce the risk of cancer and lifestyle-related diseases. However, supplementary intake of β-carotene alone has been reported to increase the risk of lung cancer in male cigarette smokers and people who were exposed to asbestos. The mechanism of the antioxidative properties of carotenoids in vivo, especially under oxidative stress conditions, still remains unclear...
full textVEGF-121 preserves renal microvessel structure and ameliorates secondary renal disease following acute kidney injury.
Acute kidney injury induced by renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) compromises microvascular density and predisposes to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and sodium-dependent hypertension. VEGF-121 was administered to rats fed a standard (0.4%) sodium diet at various times following recovery from I/R injury for up to 35 days. VEGF-121 had no effect on the initial loss of renal function, as indicated by...
